I put one of those in my BML185 and turned it into a powerful LED spotlight, with better battery life. If anyone's interested in converting the incandescent light in their BML184 or their BML185, you can get an 18v LED bulb on ebay shipped for under twenty bucks. To those who are concerned about forgetting to push the button twice to turn off the light, just take the incandescent bulb out and forget about the "flashlight" portion that you complain about anyway.
Very sturdy construction. I'm not sure why Makita is still using incandescent bulbs in their 18v lights when their 10.8v light has a nice bright LED bulb. I'm not sure what was wrong with the light that other reviewer received because you sure can't get quality like this at the dollar store.
(I own that, too). If the incandescent portion of this light was replaced with a nice bright battery saving LED, I'd rate 5 out of 5. The fluorescent light works great.
The incandescent light is just OK.
Would of given it 5 stars but the second light on the end of the tool is a little weak. It works perfect for hanging in an engine compartment to work on a car. Secondly, I have other 18v Makita tools and its nice to be able to use those batteries for this light. I purchased this light for a couple of reasons. Overall, a good flashlight. The fluorescent light on this satisfies that need. First, there are situations where a regular flashlight just doesn't cover a broad enough area. Its 180 degree lighting area provides sufficient light in a smaller area.
But I do a lot of work in crawl spaces and attics and it works excellent for small jobs. The Incandescent portion of this light is mediocre. But the bulb is fairly dim to be of much good. The fluorescent light is amazing, as good as you could expect from a battery powered flashlight. If your trying to focus on something in the distance it works ok. All in All its an awesome light. It's bright, compact, light weight and super portable, it all but eliminates the need for a halogen work light. No more extension cords and hassling with halogen bulbs.Granted if your working in large open areas or at night this flashlight isn't going to provide the power you need.
I have the 7 piece kit with 3 batteries and use this light more than the one that came with the kit. Great Product, I work outside at night doing odd jobs and it lights up the area I'm working in just fine and the spot light on the end is great for perssion work.
A separate switch for the incandescent lamp or sliding switch would have made this more convenient its usability. Depressing the power button toggles from - OFF - to - Fluorescent - to - Incandescent - to - OFF. So rather than just ignoring the incandescent lamp altogether, I have to step though it to make sure the flashlight is fully turned off. As for a Fluorescent Flashlight, the BML184 is GREAT. Personally, I'd rather they just get rid of the incandescent lamp and save the space and simplify the usabilty. The incandescent light is not very bright and awkward to use. As for an Incandescent Flashlight, the BML184 is HORRIBLE. Actually, I only purchased the BML184 for the fluorescent flashlight, but the toggling switch is very annoying.
